Formerly known as Kittie, in southwestern Coal County.
The post office changed the name to Clarita, January 19, 1910.
Named for Clarita Kenefic, wife of William Kenefic a railroad official.

The town was named for Kittie Toler, daughter of E. B. Toler, the first postmaster.
