Bryan County
A county in southeastern Oklahoma, created at statehood from an
area approximating Recording District No. 25, Indian Territory.
Named for William Jennings Bryan
Academy
In Bryan County, 2 miles northeast of Bokchito.
The post office for for Armstrong Academy,
it was in operation from April 22, 1898, to March 15, 1920.
Achille
Located 12 miles south of Durant in Bryan County.
The post office was established June 30, 1910.
The post office was first named Achilla,
which was changed to the present designation on August 5, 1910.
The name is a corruption of the Cherokee word atsila, meaning "fire," and arose from a circumstance that a group of Cherokees settled in the locality as refugees during the Civil War.
Bloomfield Girls Seminary, established in 1853 by the Chickasaw Nation and operated by the Methodist Board of Missions. The first site was in southern Bryan County near Achille. It moved in 1917 to Ardmore, OK (Carter Co) and reopened at that time as Carter Seminary. The name was suggested by the beauty of the prairie flowers blooming nearby.
Adams
Located in western Bryan County, 8 miles northwest of Colbert.
A post office from August 2, 1901 to August 10, 1910.
The site is now inundated by Lake Texhoma.
Named for Nelson F. Adams, an early resident.
Albany
Located in southern Bryan County, 11 miles south of Bokchito.
The post office was established July 10, 1894.
Its name comes from Albany, New York.
Alleppo
Located 6 miles north of Durant in Bryan County.
A post office from February 6, 1902 to September 30, 1903.
No longer in existence.
It took its name from the city in northwest Syria.
Allison
Located 7 miles south of Durant in Bryan County.
A post office from March 6, 1901 to December 15, 1921.
Its name comes from a nearby rural school known as Mount Allison.
Armstrong
Durant
Durant is the County Seat of Bryan County.
Record Town for Recording District No. 25, Indian Territory.
The post office was estiblished March 8, 1882.
From February 20, 1879, to July 11, 1881, an earlier post office,
known as Durant Station, had been in operation at this site.
Named for the well known Choctaw family of which Dickson Durant was the prominent member.
Silo
Located in western Bryan County, 8 miles northwest of Durant.
A post office from November 4, 1893, to January 31, 1946.
Named for Albert B. "Silo" Gates, an early day resident.
